Bear Hunting

There are several methods of bear hunting:

Hunting at a den:

Dogs find a bear den, and an enraged bear leaps out moving at a lightning speed, sometimes straight at the hunter, who has seconds to get the bear down or be mauled. Probably the most dangerous and unpredictable bear hunt of them all. This is why it is never done without a backup by an experienced guide, who is there not to assist the hunter in getting a trophy (which is never a certainty in this hunt), but for the hunter's safety.

Hunting in oat fields:

A high stand (a raised platform where the hunter is placed) is built at the edge of an oat field where bears come to feed at night. Hunting in oat fields is popular in the middle region of Russia.

Hunting over bait from high stands:

A hunter is waiting for a bear on a high stand with a chunk of meat placed nearby.

Hunting by stalking:

A hunter approaches the bear within a shooting distance.

Hunting with dogs:

Dogs find the bear, surround it and stop the bear by barking and lunging at it, which gives the hunter a chance to approach the bear within a shooting distance.

Bears know how to make use of important information, like smell. If you use deodorants, Eau-de-Cologne, or perfumes you cannot deceive a bear even if it is a natural flower scent. From our long experience, we believe that a bear can smell alcohol even in very natural perfumes. For this reason, hunting grounds is not the place for anyone who's had a drink or has a hangover.

One needs to approach hunting on high stands very seriously. Even if you don't fire a shot you can still spoil hunting for your companions. It is important to dress appropriately. You should wear warm clothes made of soft materials. There are plenty of hunting outfits in hunting stores, but almost all of them rustle. In windless weather you cannot move on the stand to prepare for your shot and not to be heard by the bear. And even in windy weather, if you brush a tree branch when moving, you will scare the animal off. In Karelia, for instance, air is transparent and clear, and the sound travels far, like in the mountains. On one occasion we could easily hear voices of hunters who were building a hut at a distance of 4 km.
